The arrival of the newborn is always tidings of good joy. Man is mortal but becomes immortal in the baby that carries on with the story of mankind without a break.

There is no hard and fast rule of what the layette should consist of but the important thing is to be practical and take note of the climate. What suits ‘A’ in the tropics may not be suitable for ‘B’ in colder climes. The clothes must breathe and in this respect cotton is the top choice. The little one quickly develops rashes and blisters if kept swaddled all the time or allowed to stay too long in diapers – despite advice given to the contrary by firms that promote sales!
Of prime importance is the safety factor. It is better to avoid buttons or anything that can come loose for baby to pop into the mouth.
Baby layette consists of clothing as well as bedding sets for the newborn. In western tradition the women would knit and sew with their hands the layette for the baby while pregnant. Today with working pregnant mothers, aunts and grandmothers, the layette refers to a special section of the shop selling baby clothes. Baby layette also connotes the bedding and sundry items meant for baby care.
